Dustin Wilcox, a senior journalism major and media production minor from Hopkinsville, has earned top honors in the Hearst Journalism Awards. He placed fourth in the student audio competition and tied for 17th in feature writing.
Wilcox is a student journalist at WKMS. He will advance to the finals in the audio competition, tentatively scheduled for late May in San Francisco.
Wilcox joins several other JMC alumni who have won Hearst awards. Last year, Piper Casseto placed fifth in television features and Hannah Bullard placed sixth in audio.
“This Hearst Award is a harbinger for a prominent career for this young journalist,” said Dr. Kevin Qualls, JMC chairman. “Hearst recognizes what we in the JMC Department already knew: Dustin Wilcox does exemplary work. And we are so pleased to be part of his education.”
The Hearst Journalism Awards program, now in its 62nd year, is college journalism’s top honor. The competition includes two photojournalism, one audio, two television, and four multimedia competitions. The program offers up to $700,000 in scholarships, matching grants and stipends. 103 member universities of the Association of Schools of Journalism and Mass Communication with accredited undergraduate journalism programs are eligible to participate in the Hearst competitions.
