Murray State News editors herald changes to student media organization

Change is inevitable in the news business. The students at The Murray State News have embraced changes with the beginning of a new academic year.

The Murray State News is now a digital-first publication with monthly thematic printed editions. The first tabloid-sized print edition hit newsstands on Thursday, Aug. 17, the first Thursday of the semester. Other print editions will be produced on Sept. 14, Oct. 12, Nov. 2 and Nov. 30 this semester.

The News remains a student-run and editorially independent publication. Eight students are currently involved as the editorial board, which makes the policy and content decisions.

News staffers will post content regularly to the website (TheNews.org). These stories will highlight campus news and activities, student life, updates and announcements about events, feature stories, opinion pieces and sports updates, previews and recaps. The News also aims to produce more multimedia content including photos, videos and eventually audio.

“This is a new era at The Murray State News,” co-editors Jill Smith and Jakob Milani wrote in the Welcome Back first edition. “We are so excited to continue sharing stories important to the Murray State community.”

The move to digital-first reflects the changes in the news industry. The News is now a news organization rather than a newspaper, News adviser Leigh Landini Wright said.

“The students have embraced the change and have so many fantastic ideas to move The News forward,” Wright said. “We look forward to continuing our tradition of excellence while embracing the future.”
