Dr. Carol Terracina-Hartman, assistant professor in journalism and mass communications, was honored with the Louis E. Ingelhart First Amendment Award by the College Media Association on Oct. 31, 2023, at the organization’s fall national convention in Atlanta, Georgia.
College Media Association President Chris Whitley said this award is not one that is presented every
year, but just when a candidate is nominated. “Carol, there are some amazing people who have won this award, and you’re so deserving to have your name added to this list,” Whitley said via email, adding to the announcement from Vice President Hillary Warren.
In 2018, Terracina-Hartman was honored with a Distinguished Adviser Award at a fall national convention in Louisville. In 2012, she earned 3rd place in the Ken Nordin Research Paper Competition, presenting at The Association for Education in Journalism and Education Conference in St. Louis, Missouri. She came to Murray State University in fall 2021 from the Penn State System of Higher Education, where she taught mass communication and advised several student media outlets, including The Clarion
Call, The Voice and HawkEye Media.
Terracina-Hartman began working with campus media in Northern California while a daily newspaper editor and contributor to NPR affiliate, FM 88.9 KXJZ. She said the reception was a special moment in her career, but that she did not receive the award alone. “I have been so fortunate to follow in the footsteps of incredible mentors – in CMA, ACP, JACC, PNPA – we are all indebted to those who come before us,” she said. “It’s all in the service of providing our students the best experience possible.”
The award was named to honor Louis E. Ingelhart, retired Ball State University journalism professor, who
dedicated much of his life to studying, writing and teaching the applications of the First Amendment.
