A Note from the Chair

Dr. Kevii Qualls

JMC was busy in SP ’24. Our updated curriculum is nearly ready for primetime. The Murray State News has a new vitality, both in-print and online. And several JMC faculty members have been recognized for their significant contributions.

Leigh Wright and Dr. Marcie Hinton were inducted into the Phi Kappa Phi honor society. The Murray State News received a Student Leadership Award from MSU’s Office of Multicultural Initiatives. And Dr. Debbie Owens received the 2024 Dr. Steve Jones Faculty Excellence Award.

This will be Dr Owens’ last semester with us, as she is retiring after years of dedicated service to her students, the department, the university and “the academy.” Dr. Owens sometimes spoke of “the academy” to remind us that we are part of something much larger than a single university. And I always appreciated that perspective.

In these pages you can read about her career, about Professor Emeritus Roger Haney’s new publication, and Dr. Hinton’s students’ latest study abroad experience. You can also read a Q&A with Public Relations alumnus Heather Mix.

Finally, thank you to Eliza Thomas, who is finishing her first year as editor/publisher of The JMC Journal. I am really glad that she is including content about retired JMC faculty and our alumni as well as current students. We are all proud MSU-JMC Racers!

I Never Wrote A Slogan – My Journey from Murray State to Spotify

By Megan (Summers) Haneline (ADV ’13) Too many years ago, I was sitting among the cluttered bookcases in Professor Welsch’s office, daydreaming of having my own office someday, when he asked where I saw myself after graduation. I’m sure my answer was something like writing catchy slogans at an ad agency in New York City. […]

The Lisa Crites Story: Broadcast Journalist to Breast Cancer Survivor, Patented Inventor and Author

Lisa Crites began her studies at Murray State in 1985 as a music major scholarship recipient.
