Terracina-Hartman Heads Magazine Media for Journalism Education Organization

A JMC FirstGen faculty member was elected to serve as head of magazine media in a national journalism and education organization in 2024. Assistant Professor Carol Terracina-Hartman was tasked with developing education and research panels for a national conference held in Philadelphia in August. She also helped expand outreach on a national student magazine contest, which saw JMC’s Gateway magazine entered for the first time, and presented the industry award, Best Magazine Outlet, to High Country News

With research assistants funded through the Research Apprenticeship Program, which supports first-generation students, Dr. Terracina-Hartman presented “Their Voices are Green: Tracing Environmental Themes in College Magazines 2018-2022” to a Council of Affiliates College Media research panel.

Magazine Media has taken the lead in hosting teaching with AI-themed panels, both at AEJMC’s Southeast Colloquium last March in Lexington and again in Philadelphia. Dr. Terracina-Hartman presented Top AI Tips for Student Media in Lexington and helped organize a preconference in Philadelphia, “Creativity and Responsibility in the Age of AI.” with the Visual Media division.

Having access to pedagogy and campus policies with other mass communications professors guarantees MSU classroom instruction remains part of the discussion and current on all practices. With Murray State’s reach into 49 states, presence and participation in national education conferences boosts visibility among peers and administrators across the country.
