\n\tMore than 250 high school students and their teachers attended the 2019 High School Student Media Workshop, Sept. 27.<\/p>\n
\tThe annual workshop offered a variety of sessions related to high school student media.
\nSessions for the 2019 workshop included: Beyond Google: Finding and Evaluating Internet Sources; Bring Cash to Your Publication; Capturing the Game: Sports Still Photography; Design Trends: Inspiration from the World Around You; InDesign: Basics; Going Live in 3, 2, 1 (Facebook Live); Crafting an Effective News Story; From Multimedia to Social Media: Digital Trends and Tools You Need to Know; Crafting an effective ad; Finding, Evaluating, and Using Visuals in the Newsroom; Soaring into the online space: Graves County\u2019s journey from print to online; Looking Good in Print; 5 Do\u2019s and Don\u2019ts for Your Social Media Brand; Go team! Rally your staff and communicate more effectively; and E.S.C.A.P.E. Junk News: Fake News Detective Training via NewseumEd.org. <\/p>\n
\tTwo extended length super sessions were offered. <\/p>\n
\tTelevision students were able to attend a session in which the winners of the video competition were critiqued. TV production faculty and majors provided tips and insights for the high schoolers on how to strengthen their school\u2019s news, sports and feature coverage.<\/p>\n
\tNewspaper and multimedia students were able to tour The Murray State News<\/em>, learn about the various sections of the paper, and learn how to use AP style. The high school students produced and recorded a segment of the \u201cMurray State Minute\u201d in the newsroom of The News<\/em>.<\/p>\n \tA session was provided for the advisers to discuss best practices and talk about concerns related to high school media. <\/p>\n \tA high school media competition was provided in connection with the workshop. The winners were recognized in the opening assembly. A complete list of winners can be found at JMCJournal.org.<\/p>\n \tThe following JMC faculty and staff taught sessions in the workshop: Dr. Stephanie Anderson, Dr. Bella Ezumah, Chris Haynes, Orville Herndon, Gross Magee, Brent Norsworthy, Dr. Kevin Qualls, Elizabeth Thomas, Dr. Tim Vance, and Gill Welsch.<\/p>\n Several professionals outside the department led workshop sessions. Those session leaders included: Bailey Crossley, Murray State\u2019s social media coordinator; Marci Crouch, adviser for the Graves County Eagle Eye<\/em> online newspaper; Valerie Ezell, customer service manager at the Jostens Yearbook production plant in Clarksville, Tenn.; Amey Graybeal, Jostens; Jeremy McKeel, manager of MSU Digital Media Services; and Dana Thompson, research and instruction librarian for Murray State\u2019s University Libraries. <\/p>\n Two students led workshop sessions. Elizabeth Erwin is a senior public relations major and the public relations director for The Murray State News<\/em>. Dona Rains is a graduate student in mass communications at Murray State. She recently retired from a career in public relations with Baptist Health Systems in Paducah. <\/p>\n The workshop director was Leigh Landini Wright, associate professor of journalism and head of the department\u2019s journalism major.
