{"id":2033,"date":"2023-01-09T19:38:37","date_gmt":"2023-01-10T01:38:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jmcjournal.org\/?p=2033"},"modified":"2023-02-24T14:57:48","modified_gmt":"2023-02-24T20:57:48","slug":"noted-c-j-cartoonist-to-headline-mcgaughey-lecture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jmcjournal.org\/?p=2033","title":{"rendered":"Noted C-J cartoonist to headline McGaughey Lecture"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The McGaughey Lecture on Press Freedom and Responsibility will<br>bring noted political cartoonist Marc Murphy to the stage of Lovett<br>Auditorium at 7 p.m., Feb. 14.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>\u201cIn colonial America, publishing political cartoons critical of<br>government and its leaders was often a criminal offense, resulting in<br>heavy fines and even jail. He is regularly published<br>in The Courier Journal and USA Today. His cartoons have garnered<br>numerous local and national awards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>\u201cDissent is important if we are to have a well-informed electorate. And<br>Marc Murphy does it boldly while maintaining fair standards,\u201d<br>Qualls said. \u201cWe\u2019re fortunate to have Marc Murphy as our first McGaughey<br>lecturer.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>McGaughey began his career at Murray State following an active<br>undergraduate career in media and military service in Vietnam. He<br>returned to be adviser the Murray State News and, after a brief absence to earn his doctorate in journalism at Ohio University, joined the faculty.
