Nearly 100 regional students and their teachers attended the Journalism and Mass Communications
Department\u2019s High School Media Workshop this fall. The workshop included breakout sessions with
JMC professors, students and media professionals. It also featured special guest Renee Shaw of KET. Current Murray State students discussed hot topics in journalism, strategic communications and media careers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Western Kentucky schools that have yearbooks, news and TV programs were invited to attend
the workshop at Murray State’s Curris Center. They also submitted yearbook and media products for judging in the annual competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The JMC 412 Content Creation for Public Relations’ students produced a panel on public relations and promoting products. The Murray State Public Relations majors presented information on sports promotion, fundraising events, the differences between public relations and marketing, and what they do as PR majors at Murray State. Across the panel, the students shared their enthusiasm for the department and encouraged the high school students to pursue their media careers at Murray State.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe High School Workshop is a great way to teach what our majors have learned about creating content, so the fact they had an opportunity to tell others how to do it, seemed like a meaningful experiencethat went beyond the application of what they learned,\u201d said Marcie Hinton, professor, JMC 412. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cBesides, high school students would much rather hear from college students, who they can
relate to. The students did a fantastic job from presentation to public speaking, to content or news the high school students could use.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
