New classes include DEI, podcasting

Three new JMC classes will be offered during the 2022-23 academic year.

First, JMC 168, the introduction course for all journalism and mass communication students, received an update with a new name and inclusion as a University Studies elective. The course is now known as Media Literacy & Society.

A team of faculty worked on revising the course to center it in media literacy, a needed skill for today’s news consumers. The course received approval as a University Studies elective in spring 2021. A new University Studies framework will be offered beginning this fall.

Beginning in spring 2023, the department will offer coursework in diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI). Today’s media students need to have a solid understanding and application of DEI principles across the industry. The class, JMC 268 Diversity, Equity and Inclusiveness in Media, will critique and explore the role of diversity, equity and inclusion in Advertising, Digital Media, Journalism, Public Relations and Television.

Podcasting has been tucked into several of our classes in the past few years, but now the department will offer a standalone class as an elective open to all JMC majors and open to all MSU students. JMC 210 Podcasting: Telling Stories with Sound will allow students to learn how to write, edit, produce and distribute their own podcast.

Both JMC 210 Podcasting and JMC 268 Diversity, Equity and Inclusiveness in Media passed the Academic Council in April and are scheduled to be offered in spring 2023.
