The JMC department hosted a free cookout for JMC students and friends. The event was a joint effort between PRSSA, TV Club, The News and Ads Club.
Club volunteers cooked and served hamburgers and hotdogs (donated by “Off the Hoof” in Murray, Kentucky) chips and banana pudding. Murray State student Joe Reeves, junior TV production major/sports comm minor, aka DJ Kuruk, provided music for the festivities.
“The thing I was happiest about was that all the student groups, PRSSA, The Murray
State News, and the Ads Club all came together, and it was a very good event,” said Gill Welsch, Ads Club facuty adviser.
The first event of this type was hosted in September of 2019, according to Professor
Welsch, and was designed as a way to introduce the entire department’s enrollment to JMC’s student organizations.
“We had not done this since 2019, due to the problems with Covid, but I am glad it came back
and happy with how it went,” said Welsch.
The event was designed to attract new interest in the JMC Department while fostering
community among students and faculty. The DJ kept the energy high with music, making the
cookout both a social and informative gathering.
“PRSSA president Ellie Krouse (PR ’25) did a great job reaching out to student leaders of the other organizations,” Marcie Hinton, public relations professor, said. “It was so good to see this student-led effort be so successful.”
It was a perfect blend of fun, food and networking, creating a memorable evening for everyone in attendance.
